Flat Work

Stained Glass, Leaded Stained Glass & Mosaics

 

Introduction to Stained Glass 100- (This class is part of the Glass Sampler Class, but may be taken as an individual class, too. Students signing up for all four classes will be given priority over those signing up for individual classes.) This class is for the person who has never done stained glass and is not quite sure if it is for them, or the person that hasn't done the craft for many years and wants a mini-refresher course. Students will complete a small 4" x 4" panel from scrap glass and learn the basics of the copper foil technique which includes making the pattern, cutting the glass, then finishing the project by foiling and soldering the piece. Cost: $60.00 Class fee includes everything you need to make the piece and the use of our tools during this session.

Beginning Stained Glass 101- This class is for the student who has taken the Intro class or who just wants to dive right in. Students will make a small panel window from a pattern of 15 to 25 pieces. Learn the basics of the copper foil method of stained glass making. You will learn the techniques used by Tiffany to make your basic window. Classes run for eight (8) weeks and meets once a week for two hours. Cost: $179.00 + materials + tools. Students taking this class must have their own hand tools and supplies.

Intermediate Stained Glass 200 - Improve your cutting and soldering skills. Students will work on a project of 25 - 50 pieces. This class is for those who have taken Beginning Stained Glass 101 or who have done stained glass before, but feel the need to have more intensive instruction on basic skills. Classes run for eight (8) weeks and meet once a week for two hours. Students also receive an additional 2 hours of studio time per week. Cost: $179 + materials. Students taking this class must have their own hand tools and supplies. Prerequisite: Beginning Stained Glass 101. Students must call ahead to request studio time.

Advanced Stained Glass 300- Students will work from an original pattern of 250-500 pieces, either a flat panel or 3 dimensional project to be done in the Tiffany method. In addition to 16 hours of class time, students will be allowed an additional 2 hours of studio time per week. Techniques to be included in this class: how to reinforce a larger piece; how to design an original pattern; how to custom fit a piece to a specific opening. Students must bring their own hand tools. Supplies and materials are not included in the class fee. Classes run for eight (8) weeks and meets once a week for two hours. Cost: $179.00 + materials. Prerequisite: Beginning Stained Glass 101 and Intermediate Stained Glass 200. Students must call ahead to request studio time.

Advanced Stained Glass 301, Lead Came Method - Students will learn the age-old traditional method of stained glass using lead came. Projects should be 50-100 pieces. Classes run for eight (8) weeks and meets once a week for two hours. Cost: $179.00 + materials, a few additional tools will be needed for doing lead work. Students will have an additional 2 hours of studio time during the 8 week class for work on this project. Students needing additional studio time after the 8 weeks to complete their project may purchase studio time at an additional cost of $5.00/hour.Prerequisite: Beginning Stained Glass 101 and Intermediate Stained Glass 200. Students must call ahead to request studio time.

Advanced Stained Glass 302, Incorporating Fused Glass - Students will design an original pattern of 100 pieces or more that incorporates fused pieces which they will also design and make. Class time will be given to learn about basic fusing. Projects may be flat panels or 3 dimensional projects. In addition to class time, students will be entitled to an additional 2 hours of studio time during the eight (8) weeks to complete their project. Students needing additional studio time after the 8 weeks to complete their project may purchase studio time at an additional cost of $5.00/hour. Students must bring their own hand tools and call ahead to request studio time. Classes run for eight (8) weeks and meet once a week for two hours. Cost: $179.00 + materials. Prerequisite: Beginning Stained Glass 101, Intermediate Stained Glass 200, and Introduction to Fusing 100.

Advanced Stained Glass 303, Glass Plating - Using pre-made or original patterns, students will learn a glass plating (layering) technique which adds dimension to your stained glass panel. This method incorporates the Tiffany method and adds a level of creativity and depth to any stained glass piece. Classes run for eight (8) weeks and meets once a week for two hours. Students must bring their own tools. Cost: $179.00 + materials. Prerequisite: Beginning Stained Glass 101 and Intermediate Stained Glass 200.

Advanced Stained Glass 304, Repair and Restoration - Come in and learn how to repair your stained glass window or lampshade. We will teach you how to do repairs on both copper foil pieces and leaded pieces. Students must have their own project to work on. Classes run for four (4) weeks and meets once a week for two hours. Students must bring their own tools. Cost: $100.00 + materials. Prerequisite: Beginning Stained Glass 101 and Intermediate Stained Glass 200.

Studio Time and More Information.

Introduction to Mosaics 100 - (This class is part of the Glass Sampler Class but can be taken as an individual class, too. Students signing up for all four classes will be given priority over those signing up for individual classes.) This introductory class is geared toward the person who has never done mosaic work. Students will learn how to create a design, cut the glass and make a mosaic piece using the indirect method. Participants will be able to take home a finished project. Cost is $60 and includes the use of studio tools, glass and cement to make a brick or 8" stepping stone.

Beginning Mosaics 101 - In this beginning level class students will creat a 6" mosaic trivet using vitreous glass tiles. Participants will learn basic tile cutting techniques and "andamenti"- or patterns of laying tiles. Each student will have the opportunity to choose from a variety of colors of glass tiles to create his/her own unique piece. This is a great class to learn the basics of the direct method of doing mosaic art. This is a two week class: the first class will be cutting and laying tile, and the second will be grouting and finishing. Cost is $100.00 and includes your materials as well as the use of our tools.

Intermediate Mosaics 200 - In this intermediate level class students will learn to create their own tiles using stained glass. Students can choose from a variety of glass items to use in this project, with a choice of colors and design. This is a four week class and projects must be ready to grout by the last class. Students must have their own hand tools and cost of class does not include materials. $150.00. Prerequisite: Beginning Mosaics 101.

 

 

Warm Glass
Bead Making, Fusing/Slumping, PMC, Ornaments

Introduction to Bead Making (lampworking) 100 - (This class is part of the "Glass Sampler" Class but may be taken as an individual class. Students who sign up for all four classes will be given priority over those signing up for individual classes.) This class is for the person who has never done bead-making using a torch, or who has not done the craft of lampworking for many years. Students will have the opportunity to learn how to make small filler beads using a torch and glass rods. This half day workshop is geared to introduce the novice student to basic techniques needed for glass bead-making. Demos of more advanced techniques may be given. Cost is $60.00 and includes all materials except MAPP/PROPANE tank. Students will need to purchase one cannister prior to class. These are available at most hardware stores (Lowe's, Home Depot) for around $8.00. This is an open flame class. Students must be at least 18 years old. (Min. 2 students; Max 4 students)

Beginning Bead Making (lampworking) 101 - This class is for the person who has taken the Intro to Bead-making Class or who has not done the craft of lampworking for many years. Students will have the opportunity to refine their skills at make small filler beads and learn various techniques for making larger center beads. This is a one day class geared to teach a beginning student everything they need to know to go home and successfully make their own glass beads for necklaces, bracelets, earrings, etc. Cost is $100 + Beginning Beadmaking Kit ($130.00) and two (2) Mapp/Propane fuel tanks. Class includes a 45 minute lunch break. Minimum of two (2) students and a maximum of four (4) students per class.This is an open flame class. Students must be at least 18 years old. Advanced Bead-making (lampworking) 200 - In this class students will learn how to make larger, more elaborate beads to serve as center pieces of a necklace or bracelet. This is 2 day class. Students must have taken the 101 class. Students who have taken a bead-making class elsewhere will need to get the permission of the instructor. Students will need to provide their own tools and supplies along with two (2) MAPP fuel canisters available for purchase at most local hardware stores. Cost: $150.00. Students will get a 45 minute lunch break. Minimum of three (3) students and a Maximum of six (6) students per class. Prerequisite: Introduction to Beadmaking 100 and Beginning Beadmaking 101. Introduction to Glass Fusing 100 - (This class is part of the Glass Sampler Class but can be taken as an individual class, too. Students signing up for all four classes will be given priority over those signing up for individual classes.) This class is for the person who has never taken a fusing class and would like to learn the basics. Students will have the opportunity to make a fused glass pendant that can be made into a necklace or used as a cabochon for a larger piece or in a stained glass or mosaic piece. Cost: $60 which includes materials and fusing fee.

Beginning Glass Fusing 101- Students will learn a variety of beginning fusing and slumping techniques, fusing/slumping prep, as well as how to schedule the kiln for their projects. This is an 8 week class that meets once a week for two hours. Cost is $179.00 and includes fusing time during the class. Students must have their own hand tools and supplies. Material costs will vary depending on glass chosen. We carry Bullseye and Uroboros 90, and System 96 products manufactured by Spectrum and Uroboros. Students are responsible for notifying the studio when alternative manufacturer's products are being used in their projects and are responsible for providing manufacturer's suggested fusing schedules to the studio at the time of firing. If such information is not provided, items will be fused using studio standard firing schedules. Suevel Studios reserves the right to refuse to fire materials brought in from outside sources or other manufacturers than the above named companies and bears no liability if such items are unsuccessfully fused in our kilns. Minimum of three (3) students and a Maximum of six (6) students per class.

Advanced Glass Fusing 300 Advanced Glass Fusing Workshops are designed for the student who has taken the Beginning Glass Fusing and wishes to explore specific advanced techniques in an intensive. Each workshop will be shorter in length, and focus on a specific project. On average these workshops will be two - three weeks, and students will complete one project. Students must have their own hand tools and supplies. Material costs will vary depending on project and glass chosen. Some ideas we are kicking around: Wall Sconces and Lamp Shades, learn to make beautiful lamp fixtures for your home; Wall Tiles- learn how to create fused glass tiles and design a lovely glass mosaic; Kiln-formed Bracelets, learn how to make lovely glass bracelets, custom fit to your wrist; Fused Clock, learn how to design and make a fused clock face; Hot Mosaics, learn how to create beautifully fused mosaic style pieces of art; Slumping Wine Bottles, take those interesting wine bottles from a special occasion and turn them into a piece of wall art to remember. Beginning PMC (Precious Metal Clay) 101 - Students will have the opportunity to learn how to make fused jewelry using silver, copper or bronze Art Clay in this all day workshop. Each piece will be fired and polished in class so students will leave with beautiful pieces of finished jewelry to show and amaze family and friends. Cost: $100 for the class plus materials and supplies which will be based off current metal prices. This cost will also vary depending on choice of metal. Blown Glass Ornaments 101 - A fun and easy class where you will learn how to make fabulous blown glass ornaments. Each student will be given 20 glass tubes to fill with their favorite color or colors of glass and heat them with a torch. You will then blow the warm glass (actually its really hot) into a one-of-a-kind ornament. Participants must bring two (2) MAPP/Pro tanks to class which may be purchased at most hardware stores. Min. 4 Max. 8 students per class. Cost: $100.00

Additional Classes

Introduction to Wire Wrapping 100 - A two hour workshop where students will learn how to wire wrap their glass beads, PMC pieces or glass cabochons using copper wire. Students must bring their own beads to class to use. Cost: $60.00. Additional materials fee payable to instructor.

Studio Time and More Information including: Refund Policies, Project Storage and Missed Classes

Project Storage: We have very limited space for the storage of students projects. We are happy to store your project for you while you are actively coming to our studio. However, we would appreciate you taking your project home should you know that you will be absent for an extended period of time. Projects left over 60 (sixty) days will be considered abandoned and disposed of unless alternative arrangements have been made.

*Studio Time: Students who have completed at least one Beginning Stained Glass classe will be eligible to purchase "Studio Time Cards." Each card is $40 and is good for eight(8) one-hour sessions. Your 9th and 10th session are on the house for a total of 10 one-hour sessions! If you are already an experienced stained glass maker you may purchase "Studio Time Cards" or pay for studio time by the hour. Our fee is $5 per hour. During studio time, people may use our grinders and other heavy duty tools (band saw, table saw, etc.) but, they must provide their own hand tools and supplies (ie, rubbing alcohol, masking tape, pens and pencils, flux remover, polish, patina, etc.) Studio Time is run Tuesdays thru Saturdays: 10:00 AM - 3:00 PM. You must call us prior to coming into our studio to insure there is space available. Students registered for classes and those who have called ahead to reserve a spot will be given priority.

Due to the popularity of our classes, we have instituted the following guidelines to guarantee space in our classes and to avoid last minute cancellations:

1.) All classes must be paid for in full to reserve a space in our classes.

2.) Tuition Refund Policy: WE DO NOT REFUND CLASS FEES OR DEPOSITS. However, we will make every effort to allow you to make up a class if you find you are unable to attend a class for which you have registered. Students should call within 24 hours of the start of a class if they will be unable to attend.

3.) Any classes cancelled by Suevel Studios due to inclement weather, instructor illness, lack of enrollment or an unforeseen emergency will be rescheduled. In cases of questionable weather conditions, a decision of whether to cancel the class will be made as early as possible. We will call the number you provide to notify you of a cancellation.

4.) Prerequisites: These are determined by the instructor for each class. They are at the discretion of the instructor and only the instructor may waive them.

We reserve the right to refuse service to anyone.
